From Tech Transfer Newsletter, Fall 2005 » printer-friendly Free Snow & Ice Control HandbookAlthough California is renowned for its beaches and sunshine, the state certainly gets plenty of snow, too. We have over four thousand miles of snow routes on our state roads alone. In winter, California's mountainous roadways not only carry the usual personal and commercial vehicles, but many also carry heavy seasonal recreational traffic. These routes require extensive snow fighting activity to keep open and safe for motorists during and after winter storms and snowfall. Difficulties can be compounded by the fact that many motorists driving in these areas are not accustomed to driving in snowy or icy conditions, many expect to be able to drive the same way they do in the summer, and many are reluctant to pull over and install chains. This makes snow and ice control both critical and challenging. To help your agency with snow and ice control, the Technology Transfer Program is giving away FREE Snow & Ice Control Handbooks. These handbooks contain information, charts, tables, and best practices for effective anti-icing, de-icing and plowing. These pocket-sized guides are printed on waterproof, tear-proof synthetic paper and belong in the hands of every snow plow and spreader operator. These handbooks are free to employees of cities, counties and Caltrans. We have only a limited number, so we ask that individuals request just one copy. Public works directors and maintenance supervisors may request a sufficient number for their snow crew, while supplies last. Place your order on-line at www.techtransfer.berkeley.edu/freestuff or call 510-665-3410.
