What's New At Tech Transfer?

Free Online Courses from Tech Transfer

Let us bring the classroom to your computer screen

Tech Transfer has developed several online training courses based on the popular free Federal Aid Project Training Series. These courses are a good alternative to our traditional classroom courses and the format is perfect as an introduction for new hires or as an update for seasoned staff.

The courses feature audio narration by instructors, slides, interactive quizzes, links, and downloadable material. They are also significantly more efficient than the traditional one-day classroom sessions at about three hours apiece, and you can navigate at your own pace. The classes are available 24/7 over the Internet, using Internet Explorer or Netscape. The courses currently available are:

  • Federal Procedural Requirements for Environmental Analysis for Transportation Projects/NEPA

    (Course 2 - EV-03)
Taught by Maggie Townsley and Debbie Loh (Jones and Stokes), this course focuses on the rules that one must follow to comply with the National Environmental Policy Act.
  • Federal Aid Project Development: Design to Construction

    (Course 4 - PD-10)
Taught by Scott Lanphier (District 3, Caltrans), Course 4 covers the procedures that should be followed to ensure accountability and regulatory compliance during construction.
  • Federal Rules for Contract Administration and Project Completion

    (Course 5 - PD-11)
Also taught by Scott Lanphier, Course 5 discusses the procedures for project development, focusing on chapters 11, 12, and 15 of the LAPM.

Our training course covering compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act ("ADA / Accessibility Requirements for Pedestrian Facilities") will also be available online in early 2007.

Visit www.techtransfer.berkeley.edu for specific system requirements, course details, and to register. The courses are designed to be user-friendly learning tools—try one today!

Training Clearinghouse

Need training? Check out the Clearinghouse

The Tech Transfer Program isn't the only organization that offers training in transportation-related fields in and around California. To help you find the training that best fits your needs, we maintain the Training Clearinghouse, an online, searchable database that contains listings of currently scheduled classes offered in California and neighboring states, as well as Internet classes and links to training providers.

Listings are organized into eight broad categories—and a miscellaneous grouping—that make it easy for you to browse and find the course that best fits your training needs:
  • Pavement and Highways
  • Traffic Engineering and Operations
  • Multimodal Planning and Policy
  • Administration, Management, and Finance
  • Intelligent Transportation Systems
  • Environment
  • Non-auto modes
  • Safety and Security

So, next time you're looking for training in transportation engineering and related fields, start at the Training Clearinghouse. It will probably be the only place you need to look. The Clearinghouse is located at www.techtransfer.berkeley.edu/clearinghouse. You'll want to bookmark it.

There's also another way we can help. Is your organization sponsoring a training session? Add clearinghouse@techtransfer.berkeley.edu to your announcement list and we'll add your event to the Training Clearinghouse.

New Tech Transfer Course for Bridge Engineers

Introducing: Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) Methodology for California Bridges (IDM-23)

Attend this course to learn how to make the technical design aspects of your projects adhere to the newly adopted AASHTO LRFD bridge design book and the California Amendments. Based on your structure's limit states, you will need to use the new LRFD to derive design specifications. Students in this two-day hands-on course will learn the changes in bridge design specifications, the LRFD design approach, how structures need to be designed to meet limit states (ie, serviceability, strength, extreme condition, and fatigue and fracture), permanent and live loading considerations, and several other topics.
