Abstract: A surprise to most work crews, more accidents in work zones are attributed to working in close proximity to heavy equipment than to vehicles crossing into the work zone. The most important thing a worker can do to decrease risk of injury or death, is to take personal responsibility for his own safety, to always stay alert and to always be aware of his surroundings. This video examines the dangers inside the work zone and offers advice to lower the risks. Repeatedly stressing personal responsibility for safety, topics include: basic safety concerns of road crews and common accidents; practices to avoid accidents and prevent hazards on the work site; traffic control; personal protective equipment and practices; safely working near or operating heavy equipment; the unique considerations of night operations, excavations, and working near overhead utilities; the importance of reading and understanding equipment manuals, being trained and qualified on a piece of equipment, and knowing the capabilities and limitations of the equipment; the importance of the pre-start inspection, documentation of maintenance activities and how to park and shut-down the equipment for the night.
Notes: For road construction and maintenance heavy equipment operators and ground crew.
