Abstract: With training and experience, roadside maintenance and landscape crews can effectively monitor trees for prominent evidence of potential hazards. Work crews can serve as the first line of defense by identifying problems in tree structure and observing the presence of decay, dead limbs, root disease or storm damage. This video explains basic defects in trees that can lead to failure; how to identify tree defects by recognizing their indicators; the influence of landscape maintenance practices and equipment operation on trees; and the effects of construction activities such as grading, compaction, trenching, changes made to drainage, and construction of curbs and sidewalks. This video explains actions to reduce the risk of tree failure, including when to call in an arborist or urban forester.
Notes: For groundskeepers, highway right-of-way workers, landscape maintenance personnel and others who work near trees on public property.
